The current generation of Acura’s mid-size SUV has been around for a while and it is highly appreciated for many things, particularly for its great value for money. It is a relevant player in the segment, which has so many good things to offer and now it looks the Japanese luxury brand could offer even more. It looks like the company is preparing a hybrid powertrain for the next year’s model. If that happens, the 2024 Acura MDX will be the first MDX to get a hybrid powertrain in four years, considering that the previous model with such a powertrain was discontinued in 2020. Now, both MDX and non-premium Honda Pilot are getting such systems.

We presume that the new model will come with a different, more efficient setup. Other than that, we don’t believe it could bring significant differences compared to the gasoline version. The overall design would remain the same, though there is always room for minor updates, such as new pieces of standard equipment and similar things.

2024 Acura MDX Hybrid

If we can trust rumors, the biggest novelty for the 2024 Acura MDX will be the reintroduction of the hybrid version. The previous generation was offered in such a variant and it featured a pretty capable setup, based on a 3.0-liter V6 engine, with a total output of 321 horsepower. Moreover, the powertrain was also coupled with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, so the overall driving experience was pretty engaging.

However, the problem with that powertrain was poor fuel economy and price tag. So, we expect a little bit different approach this time, probably with a new system that’s based on a turbo-four engine. That model would combine the capable gasoline engine with two or more electric motors and we expect that max output to go over 300 horsepower. There is also the matter of transmission, where the new system could either come with a 10-speed automatic or with a CVT.

Other Engines

The rest of the lineup should carry on in the same way. So, base models would continue to use a good-old, super-reliable and very refined 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower. This engine comes in pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The engine offers more than decent performance, in a combination with decent fuel economy. It returns around 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is typical for the class.

Also, there is the performance-oriented MDX Type S, which comes with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, with a max output of 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The engine also comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the average fuel economy goes around 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. It’s worth mentioning that Type S comes standard with the company’s famous SH-AWD system.

Design

On the other hand, the rest of the design should remain largely the same. The current generation is still quite fresh and the 2024 Acura MDX will represent the third production year. That seems too early for bigger changes, even for a mid-cycle refresh. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see minor updates, such as new color options, while the hybrid version could come with a few more tweaks, with a few details that accentuate the model’s electrified nature.

The same is with mechanics, so we count on a familiar driving experience. The chassis and suspension setup is done in such a way that the handling and the ride quality in general seem quite engaging. At the same time, the ride is also pretty smooth and comfortable. Of course, the Type S is a little bit stiffer and offers a little bit more direct handling.

Once again, no bigger changes are expected to happen. The cabin looks nice and even though the MDX is more affordable than most classmates, it still looks pretty luxurious. The materials are fine, as well as the aesthetics. Furthermore, the amount of tech features is pretty generous and makes the cabin look even better.

Also, it’s good to know that this model offers three rows of seats, which isn’t always the case with mid-size luxury crossovers. The first two rows are pretty generous with space, while the third row is typically tight for the segment, just like rivals like Audi Q7 are.

Finally, the list of standard equipment is pretty long and includes goodies like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with a touchpad controller, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, USB ports, Bluetooth, tri-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof, a power liftgate, a universal garage door opener, proximity keyless entry and push-button start.

2024 Acura MDX Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2024 Acura MDX will arrive sometime in the last quarter of the year, with a starting price of around 50.000 dollars. Of course, the hybrid version would probably cost a little bit more, though it’s still early for more precise estimations.
