Electrifying the Iconic SUV: 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric

The famous G-Wagen is known for many reasons and one of them is that it had a pretty interesting journey, which started with a rugged, military-based off-road design to the modern layout that’s particularly popular among celebrities. However, that has never changed the model’s true nature, so we are pretty sure that, even after electrification, the legendary off-roader will remain the same. The 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric will get an all-electric powertrain but it won’t lose any of its ruggedness and off-road capability.

From what we know so far, the new iteration will join the EQ family. Most likely, it will be named EQG and it will feature the company’s most advanced technologies, including the battery. On the other hand, it will remain a classic body-on-frame SUV, with the legendary boxy shape and other trademarks that made G-Class a legend. The company already presented a concept two years ago and we are pretty sure that the production version won’t be far away from that design.

We expect to see it either in late 2023 or sometime in 2024.

As we’ve just mentioned, the average buyer’s profile of this SUV may change but the overall design remained the same. That’s why we have no doubt that, even though fully electrified, the 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric will stick to the fundamentals that were established long ago. The 2021 concept supports this theory in many ways, starting from the platform, which is once again a genuine body-on-frame, with a fully framed ladder chassis.

With such a design, the German manufacturer will ensure the excellent off-road potential of the new electric SUV but, at the same time, the advanced and pretty refined suspension setup will also ensure a smooth and comfortable ride. From what we know so far, the front end will come equipped with a multi-link independent suspension, while the rear end will carry on with rigid axle.

Exterior Design

Once again, we can refer to the concept version and easily confirm that the 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric will be the evolution of a long-time-ago-established design language. That concept came with a familiar silhouette, with a design that’s been characterizing this SUV for decades. The boxy shape is still there, but there are also a few futuristic details, which clearly suggest that this is an electrified variant of the beloved off-roader.

That’s particularly noticeable at the front, where you can notice completely new headlights, while the grille also features a little bit different shape, with a modern mesh pattern. The rest of the lighting groups also looks futuristic, while there are also new wheels, combined with a good number of new details that make this SUV look even better than before.

Interior

The interior design is still a bit of a mystery. Namely, the concept version came with a dashboard design that looked pretty much the same as in other models from the German manufacturer. Of course, we doubt that this SUV is going to follow the modern trends of the EV industry, which includes minimalistic design complemented by massive screens, but we also count on some dose of exclusivity, something that would set this model apart from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

On the other hand, we don’t expect to see bigger surprises in terms of the seating configuration and passenger space. Namely, the new model shouldn’t feature different proportions from the gas-powered model, which indicates the same configuration that includes two rows of seats and the ability to accommodate five passengers.

The same thing should happen with cargo space. For reference, the current model is good for about 38 cubic feet behind the second row and 69 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.

2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric Powertrain and Battery

The all-electric G-Wagen will come in two variants, at least. From what we know so far, the four-motor version is definitely coming. This model will be the range-topping variant, with four electric motors – one for each wheel, which promises a lot in terms of off-road potential. On the other hand, base models will have to come with a more modest setup and from what we can hear, that model will come with two electric motors. So far, we haven’t heard anything about power figures.

The battery pack, on the other hand, is already familiar, at least rumors say so. Namely, the 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon Electric will most likely feature the same pack as the EQS, which would mean a 108-kWh battery in all models. We estimate that a battery of this size can provide around 300 miles of all-electric range. It’s also worth mentioning that this battery supports charging speeds of up to 350kW, which suggests that 80 percent of the battery can be charged in about 30 minutes.
