Despite the age, the current-generation 4Runner still marks impressive sales numbers. Simply, it is one of the last remaining genuine SUVs on the market, which offers strong off-road performance, which is rugged and bulletproof. However, Toyota is aware that it’s time for changes and if we can trust the latest reports, the all-new model will arrive in a year or two, probably as the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. The expectations from the new model are huge, especially if we consider that the current version has been on the road since 2009.

This redesign should bring changes in various aspects. The first thing that comes to mind is the platform, which will be the same one that underpins the new Tundra, Lexus LX and Sequoia models. Furthermore, the company will introduce a new powertrain, more efficient and more capable than the current V6 unit. Along with the new engine, we expect to see new transmission, as well as a completely new styling and cabin design.

Most likely, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner will hit the market sometime in the second half of 2023.

2024 Toyota 4Runner Redesign

Considering the age of the ongoing model, there is no doubt that the upcoming redesign will bring a full load of changes. The first thing that comes to mind is the platform. Things are pretty clear in this aspect, as we all expect to see the next 4Runner riding on the TNGA-F platform, in a little bit smaller iteration compared to the aforementioned siblings.

The new platform will bring all kinds of benefits, starting from weight reduction, improved ride quality etc. However, the new 2024 Toyota 4Runner won’t lose any of its nature. We expect to see a capable off-roader once again, with a rugged design and strong utility potential.

Of course, off-roading is one of the first things that comes to mind. So, expect to see all kinds of off-road features, especially in the TRD Pro trim. Some of the things that come to mind are goodies like off-road suspension, a two-speed transfer case, locking differentials, skid plates, off-road tires, hill descent control and many more.

Exterior

Naturally, this redesign will bring a completely new exterior design. We count on a new styling, which may take a bit of inspiration from the bigger Tundra and Sequoia models. Still, it should also come with a lot of exclusive details. Of course, the TRD Pro will once again come with loads of exclusive features, which will accentuate its off-road performance nature.

When it comes to exterior dimensions, we don’t expect bigger changes. The current model features a relatively short wheelbase for a mid-size SUV, which limits passenger room in some measure. On the other hand, that’s one of the reasons why this SUV has great off-road potential. Therefore, we are pretty sure that the new model won’t sacrifice any of its off-road performance, even if that means a similar amount of passenger space as in the current model.

Interior

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner probably won’t get much bigger. So, we may expect a similar amount of passenger space. Therefore, we expect to see a couple of quite spacious and comfortable rows of seats, while the third row should be tight and for kids only. The cargo area should also offer respectable numbers.

On the other hand, we expect to see a completely new dashboard design, with a much more attractive appearance. The new cabin should utilize much nicer aesthetics, along with finer materials and better build quality. Furthermore, we count on all kinds of new tech features, starting from a massive infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, various connectivity features and more.

2024 Toyota 4Runner Engines

The current 4.0-liter V6 is definitely going to be discontinued. We expect to see replacements, which are more capable and, more importantly, more efficient. The first pick is definitely the new 2.4-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. That engine would probably come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Many sources suggest that higher trim levels would come with a hybrid powertrain. That version would probably feature the company’s new system, based on a turbo-four engine. We presume it would feature a max output of around 350 horsepower. Unlike most Toyota Hybrids, this one wouldn’t use a CVT, but rather a conventional automatic gearbox.

The TRD Pro could easily come with the new 3.4-liter V6, rumors suggest.  This engine powers the new Tundra and comes in two output variants, with either 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, 389 horses and 479 pound-feet of torque.
