The next year will bring big novelties from the Swedish manufacturer, as we are about to see a brand-new all-electric flagship SUV, which will succeed the good-old XC90. However, the ICE mid-size SUV won’t be discontinued right away. Instead, the two models will co-exist for some time, which indicates that both the 2024 Volvo XC90 and EX90 EV SUV will be on offer in the next year. One will bring a completely new design, with advanced EV technologies, while the other will bring more conventional design solutions, which work better for more conservative buyers.

The new EX90 EV SUV will ride on the new generation of the familiar SPA platform and besides strong EV performance and respectable charging speeds, it will also bring attractive styling, a high-end interior and a full load of new technologies. On the other hand, the XC90 will carry on in the same way, without more important changes.

The brand-new EX90 will arrive in early 2024, while the good old 2024 XC90 should hit showrooms already in the last quarter of 2023.

When it comes to the base design, the two models will be significantly different in many ways, but will also have a lot of things in common. For example, both models will compete in the mid-size, three-row SUV segment. On the other hand, the new electric iteration will ride on an updated, SPA2 platform, which will implement all kinds of new technologies, not just in terms of the battery, but also in terms of new advanced safety and driver-assistance features.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 and EX90 EV SUV models will feature similar dimensions but notably different styling. The old XC90 will carry on in the same way, without more important changes. On the other hand, the new EV will bring a more futuristic look, heavily inspired by the Recharge concept.

Interior

Once again, the 2024 Volvo XC90 and EX90 EV SUV will have some things in common, but also some notable differences. The XC90 will continue with a familiar cabin layout, which offers an elegant design that still looks fresh and attractive, after all these years. The new EV iteration will offer a more futuristic design, with a completely simplified dash, highlighted by a massive infotainment screen and a sleek digital instrument cluster.

In terms of comfort, we don’t expect to see significant differences, considering that the two models will feature the same seating configuration, which includes three rows of seats. As the wheelbase is the same in the two models, we may presume that the passenger room will also be pretty similar. Considering that the battery will be positioned under the floor, we presume that the cargo area won’t be compromised in the EX90.

Tech Features

The new EX90 EV will be full of modern features, starting from a massive 14.5-inch infotainment display, which will come in a combination with the company’s latest, Google-based infotainment system. Among standard tech features, expect to find Google Maps-powered in-dash navigation, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 5G cellular data connection. Among upgrades, expect to find premium sound systems, such as Bowers & Wilkins, Dolby Atmos, etc.

Although old, the XC90 is still a well-equipped machine, full of modern features. Some of the highlights are goodies like a 12.3-inch digital infotainment system, a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and two USB ports.

Of course, the most significant differences will be those under the hood. On one side, the all-new EX90 will come with an all-electric setup and from what we know so far, there will be two variants on offer. Base models will feature a dual-motor setup with 402 horsepower, while the high-output versions will be good for about 496 horses. Both variants will come with a 111-kWh battery pack, which should ensure around 300 miles of range. With the DC fast charger, the new electric SUV will be able to charge 80 percent of the battery in about 30 minutes.

On the other hand, the XC90 will continue in three familiar versions. Base models will come with a  247-hp turbo-four, while the more capable turbo- and supercharged version of the engine will put out around 295 horsepower. Finally, there is the plug-in hybrid with 455 horsepower. All three units come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
